Postby ColumbusCycling on Tue Mar 08, 2005 2:10 am

Kids,

Monday night rides returns this coming Monday (the 14th of March). Meet at 9:30 PM in front of Wexner. Look here for cancellations, but if you hear nothing, assume it's on.

Last night was a blast. Thanks for a great ride. As a brief TR, the route was up to Bethel, over to the river, down Riverside, and then farting around on a bike trail for a little bit. Sorry I don't know my way around town better; someone with more knowledge than this newbie has might chime in with a better route description.... Eight of us braved the cold (?) for 21 miles of sweet, urban night-riding.

Hope to see everyone out there again.

Did you all have lights and stuff or what? Seems crazy riding at night like that especially with all the potholes around this time of year.

Thanks. It had to be a bit cold at night, as it was only 45 during the day in the sun. I guess i'm just a wimp, but I'll try to make it out in future weeks.

There were 8 tail lights and one headlight among the eight-person group. I had the only headlight.... And I got the only flat (from hitting a pot-hole).

it was a good time, definitely. all should come.

the route was pretty ad hoc.. we took high to woodruff (woody hayes or whatever), took that out to kenny.. kenny to henderson, henderson to riverside, riverside down (parts on the river path) to 5th.. 5th back to high.. going back up high to north 4th around hudson put my ride ~20miles. nothing too insane, but a decent jaunt for an out-of-shape person like myself. we kept a pretty mild pace, too, which was nice for chatting while riding and all that.

it was pretty bloody dark along parts, but nothing unservicable. my eyes adjusted pretty well so long as no one was blasting me with their brights.

blast

Postby shants on Fri Mar 25, 2005 10:32 pm

unfortunately i couldn't make it to the mar 21st ride. i have/had the flu of death. i hope that it went well. i was really looking forward to going again. hopefully i will be less dead by monday and can swing it. my lung capacity right now is abysmal due to the illness and my legs are sore as all hell. being sick definitely hampers my riding. i had to ride to/from work today and nearly died.

if i don't make it, have fun!

cheers and latertimes, aaron

Who all from this forum was at the ride last night? This is Brian, the tall bespeckled guy with the green Bridgestone fixie. I think I met shants...

Anyway, for those who didn't make it, it was a blast. A good mix of 10 people showed up. We basically went straight south on High St. until it turned into a highway at 270 (funny moment, that), then turned around to head back to the High Beck Tavern for free pizza. I think it was 12-13 miles, but the kicker was the harsh wind blowing from the north. So, the ride south was a breeze (pun intended), but heading back up was...interesting.

I'm definitely going to keep up with this. I hope to see and meet more of you on future rides.

I thought I was about to get out of class early so I was excited but then my teacher had "1 more thing" which took another hour. I got out at 9:30 and I don't live close to the Wexner, I assume it would take me around 20 minutes or more to get there but I've never timed myself. Maybe I'll just walk out early one of these days if the weather is too nice. I'm making sure that my new schedule will fit the Monday night rides and the crits that I've read about either Tuesday or Thursday, I'm hoping these start, then I'll have a reason to train besides just for fun.

In the mean time is there anyone else who has the same problem with making it to Monday night rides? I'm looking for people to ride with and I'm free Thursday starting about 7:30pm and Friday anytime after 3. I'm near German village but I can meet around OSU.

Right now I'm working just about every Monday night starting at 7:00, so I don't get the chance to join in with the Monday night rides.

On a side note, I am stilll working on setting up the Columbus crit series which would more than likely be on Tuesdays. This year it may only be a month long, probably either in July or August (although I'd like it to be longer) or it would be a longer late-season crit series, but would hopefully lead into a longer event next year, say May to August. I promise to keep everyone posted.

rides of doom

Postby shants on Tue Mar 29, 2005 7:38 pm

hey "kevinccad" -- based on my two monday night ride experiences i would say quite comfortably that it would not be a problem for you to come around 9:45 or thereabouts. last night we hung around until 9:50odd waiting. the more the merrier, so if you plan on coming, people will hang out and wait.

last night was outrageous -- we wanted to go to the southwest side of columbus, but due to some bad navigational luck, we just ended up bombing down high st. ALL the way until it turned into a bloody freeway. it was nuts. downhill and with the wind at our backs the ride down was stellar. the ride back was a total mashfest -- brutal, but equally stellar. stopped at high beck tavern in the brewery district area on the way back for some booze and free pizza. good times.
